Dr. Niama L. W., Nov 7, 2009, 2:58AM ESTHello, Nyota! Yes, it is Dr. Ni, back from the--well, not the dead, let's just say the absent! :-) How have you been? I see you have a new book out? I just read the excerpt and I have a question for you: why did you decide to use the vernacular? I am always concerned (not to be critical) when I see the vernacular used given how hard it is for young Black folk to succeed in the States speaking the vernacular on a daily basis. What are your thoughts? I would love to hear your reasons! Congrats on publication. :-)

The Magic Pencil, a novel for young adults
Young Malcolm Bakersfield has been making his way through life’s pitfalls as best he can with the help of his family and friends. School’s not a problem but Malc could do better. One day he tells his older brother and a friend about his latest dream. It is as fantastic as it is wonderful! But Malc has yet to learn that it, and a pencil, will forever change his world! We join him in his quest to find the truth to the power of the pencil.
Karen E. Dabney has created memorable characters and a fun read that teaches life lessons along the way. The Magic Pencil can be enjoyed by younger children as well as adults. It is humorous and entertaining, yet didactic. There are also original poems throughout.
The well known author, Jimmy Santiago Baca, has lauded Karen’s work as “unrivaled in young adult literature.” Author Karl Klein feels the novel “is destined to become a classic.”
